I’ve tried mosaic crochet before and gave up. I didn’t do well counting stitches which messed up the pixel-art style design and I highly disliked the weird flappy back of it. It was not my intention to ever do mosaic crochet, but when I searched for ‘butterfly book crochet’ this Butterfly’s Tale pattern came up on Raverly and I fell in love. So, I’m gonna try mosaic crochet again but this time I’m educating myself a bit more. In the pattern, it provides instructions on how to anchor stitches so you don’t have flaps on the back side. I’m also going to be researching crocheting apps that help you track stitch counts and rows. That should solve my main issues where I failed with mosaic crochet before.
But, while I love the Butterfly Tale design, another thing I do not love about mosaic crochet is the monochrome colors. Mosaic crochet is stitched front only, no turning, with one color at a time. The design starts to form when you double crochet into the row below overlapping the other color. In the sample photos on the pattern I liked the rainbow gradient concept but not how it made the leaves striped. So, in this next mosaic crochet attempt, I plan to be switching colors. A lot. There will be times I’ll be carrying five colored strands and switching throughout the row. This may be insane for my second attempt. Especially when I already failed my first attempt. If I can make it work, this will be my Crochet Masterpiece. Also, because I’m planning on making it a full size blanket. Why? Because if I am going to do this, I’m gonna do it right and I’m gonna do it BIG.

Thankfully, I’ve got PhotoShop and can mock up a colorized version of the pattern to help me visualize and purchase yarn. I’m going to be using my favorite 100% cotton yarn called I Love This Cotton Yarn in 15 different colors!
I hope this works!
