Autumn Leaves Afghan

For an Autumn blanket, I wanted to have the vibe of changing leaves but instead of typical red-orange maple leaves of the East Coast, I wanted to represent the fall colors of Southern California. We have a lot of oak trees and they turn a lovely golden tan color in the fall.

I found the Maple Leaves Afghan pattern at Annie’s Catalog and thought it would be a nice blanket. As I got a few rows in, I realized I didn’t like the stacked look of the leaves. Making every other row green and opposite rows mixed colors, gave the distinctive maple leaf shape, but also made columns which I didn’t like. I ended up undoing it all and starting over, doing two rows of green leaves and then a colored leaf row. This made the colored leaves staggered instead of one on top of each other. An interesting side effect of the double green row was that the 3-leafed maple leaf now has turned into a 5-leafed hemp or marijuana leaf.
